Speed Skating State Championships
Ice Station Valencia, home to the Santa Clarita Speed Skating Club will hold the California State Championships this Sunday, Feb. 21 from 10:45 am to 1:45 pm. There is no charge for spectators. Since the event falls in the middle of the Winter Olympics in Vancouver, interest will be high for the upcoming skaters for the next Olympics scheduled for Moscow in 2014. Skaters from 7 to 70 will take to the ice in their respective divisions. Skaters will be grouped by ability and will compete against each other. Fourteen year-old Sarah Chen, who skates regularly at Ice Station Valencia, will be on hand to root for her clubmates. Sarah qualified for the U.S. Junior World Team and is the youngest skater to ever make the team. Events on Sunday will include the one-lap (111meters) for the youngest skaters to 1500 meters for the older ones. The standard distances for most groups will be the same in the Olympics—500, 1000 and 1500 meters.
