Local Legend Drops Puck at Kings Game

You might have heard his name tossed about around the building but odds are you’ve left before he’s even entered Ice Station. If you stick around long enough however, you’ll find 85-year old Paul Lagloire skating in his weekly pick-up game, which lasts nearly two full hours.

The native of Quebec is well-known in the Southern California hockey scene, having put together his pick-up games at local area rinks for nearly 25 years and is still going strong, even as the oldest player on the ice by leaps and bounds.

Just recently, a few friends nominated him to drop the ceremonial first puck at the Los Angeles Kings game and he was chosen to do it last night prior to their game against the Dallas Stars, the day before his birthday.

Today, on his 85th birthday, everyone at Ice Station would like to wish Paul a very happy birthday and many more to come. How will he celebrate, you ask? Another pick-up game is surely on the docket.

13th Annual Season of High School Hockey Underway

It’s hard to believe it’s been 13 years since the Ice Station Valencia High School Hockey League first began and before we knew it, it had grown from humble beginnings, to one of the top high school hockey leagues on the west coast.

Once again, eight teams will battle for the Nick Nickson trophy, competing in 10 regular season games and four rounds of playoff hockey, culminating in early May. The Antelope Valley Northerners are the returning champions and still have a lot of firepower left off from last season’s championship squad. They’ll be pushed by top area teams such as the Valencia Vikings, Saugus Centurions and Hart Indians, while the Canyon Cowboys are young but not too far behind. The other two out of area teams always seems to be tough as well, as West Valley and Burbank each returns a solid core.

The regular season officially begins on Monday March 11, with games being played on Mondays and Fridays. The full schedule is available at sportability.com.

With tickets starting as low as just $5, there’s no reason you shouldn’t come out and support your team at Ice Station!

GRAND OPENING PERFORMANCE HOCKEY ACADEMY TRAINING CENTER SATURDAY DECEMBER 8, 2012

Ice Station Valencia is pleased to announce the Grand Opening of the Performance Hockey Academy Training Center. The Performance Hockey Academy Training Center will offer a wide variety of services for players of all skill levels looking to get their game to the next level.

Located inside the Ice Station, the Training Center has all of the necessary equipment for proper off ice training, including a skating treadmill with shooting extension, plyo boxes and ladders and a wide range of weights and training aids.

Whether you are looking to build strength, improve your skating stride or improve your shot, The Training Center has what you need.

The following services are offered at the Performance Hockey Academy (PHA)Training Center:

            SKATING TREADMILL

The skating treadmill is an incredible tool to enhance any players’ speed and skating stride. The treadmill is designed to:

Simulate actual on ice movements

Improve stride length

Improve stride frequency and efficiency in a controlled environment

Improve your leg and core stability to be a better player come game time

Whether you are just learning to skate or are drafted to the NHL, the treadmill is a great teaching tool for all ages. The Training Center provides a unique environment to learn the proper skating stride. Unlike standard on ice sessions, with the instructor at skate level, we are able to assess the amount of blade being used during each stride and make the suggested corrections on the spot.

There is no substitute for the attention to detail you will get from the treadmill compared to an on ice lesson. Once you get the proper stride technique down on the treadmill you will see and feel the transition in your skating stride on the ice.

Additionally, the skating treadmill has a shooting extension attached to it that allows players to learn to shoot properly as well as to stick handle and pass while skating. Learning to shoot, while in stride, is a huge key for all players to learn and will show immediate results on the ice.

STRENGTH & CONDITIONING

With a full complement of free weights, weight machines and plyometric training aids, the PHA Training Center offers everything a player needs for proper off ice conditioning and training. Whether it is “in season maintenance” or “off season strength building”, there is something for every player.

Sessions are available for individuals, groups of 2-4 players or entire teams. Every session is tailored to the player, group or teams specific needs.

All treadmill and training sessions are instructed by Jocelyn Langlois and/or Sam Yearsley. Coach Langlois is a former professional and Major Junior hockey player and is the Valencia Flyers Junior A Head Coach as well as the Ice Station and Valencia Express Director of Player Development. Coach Yearsley is a former Canadian Junior & NCAA Division III player and is the Valencia Flyers/Express Strength & Conditioning Coach.

For more information or to book your sessions please contact Jocelyn Langlois at jocelyn@icestation.net, Sam Yearsley at sam@icestation.net or call the Ice Station Hockey Department at 661-775-8686, to speak with coach Langlois or Coach Yearsley.

Bailey, Kings’ Crew Invade Ice Station

The 2012-2013 National Hockey League regular season may still be locked out but that didn’t stop the 2012 Stanley Cup Champion Los Angeles Kings’ in-game entertainment crew from putting on a show at Ice Station Valencia last Saturday night.

Kings fans united with Flyers fans, which still seems odd to say, as the Valencia Flyers took on the Bay Area Seals in a Western States Hockey League matchup, the host Flyers did not disappoint a packed crowd that was on their feet seemingly the entire night.

Prior to the drop of the puck, fans were able to get their picture taken with Bailey, the best mascot in hockey and get autographs from Nick Nickson and Daryl Evans, the Kings renowned radio broadcast duo.

During the game, Bailey, in-arena host Jay Flats, organist Dieter Ruehle and the Kings Ice Crew worked together to get the capacity crowd riled up, as the Flyers took it to the Seals.

The sweet sounds of Ruehle’s organ, Flat’s in-game chants, and Bailey being Bailey, combined with players crashing into the glass, skates carving into the ice and sticks battling for loose pucks, many fans felt as though they were at an actual Kings home game at Staples Center.

In a fast-paced opening period, the Flyers used the crowd to get off to a great start, as veteran forward Preston Nowak notched a natural hat-trick, with all three goals coming within a span of just under four minutes, pacing the Flyers to a 3-0 lead.

As the Kings Ice Crew pumped the crowd up throughout the first intermission, the Flyers took a 5-0 lead early in the second period on goals by Austin Ehrlich and Hunter Jensen, before the Seals finally answered with a goal of their own.

The home team answered right back however, as Camrin Roczey’s goal just before the end of the period made it 6-1 Flyers, as they headed to the locker room after 40 minutes of play.

The Flyers kept the momentum going in the third and behind goals from Jake Ryan, Kevin Antipov and Eddie Keshishian, the game ended in a 9-2 Valencia route.

The newly put together line of Preston Nowak, Hunter Jensen and Austin Ehrlich combined for an astounding 15 points on the night, led by Nowak’s six, a career-high.

After the game, fans were able to stick around and grab autographs from Flyers players, concluding what was a great night of hockey, fun and giveaways.

The Valencia Flyers would like to thank Geoff Reader, Jay Flats, Dieter Ruehle, Bailey, the LA Kings Ice Crew and everyone that participated in putting together a great night of hockey.

Just like everyone else, we hope the NHL resolves the lockout and start the season soon, but would love to have any and all Kings Fans back at Ice Station to cheer the Flyers on, as their WSHL schedule continues through March.

New Special Needs Hockey Program Launched at Ice Station Valencia

For the past three years a dedicated group of developmentally challenged athletes have been finding success with the Special Olympics floor hockey program. During that time, they have not lost a game. They traveled throughout California racking up win after win, and after one particularly lopsided victory, several athletes were seeking a greater challenge, and the idea was born.

Northerners Crowned High School Hockey League Champions

It was firepower versus firepower in the High School Hockey Championship game on Monday night at Ice Station Valencia, as the Antelope Valley Northerners and Saugus Centurions, the two highest scoring teams in the entire league, went head-to-head with the title on the line.

Neither team had any depth to speak of but they both can score in bunches and the game went down to the wire, as the two heavyweights traded blows the entire evening.

The leading scorer in the league during the regular season, Northerners’ forward Liam Stirtzinger, quickly got things jumpstarted for his team, putting home his first of two on the night, just over two minutes into the contest.

The Northerners are well known for their high-powered offense but their best player in the opening period was goaltender Garrett Mello, who picked a good time to have one of his best games of the year, making countless point-blank stops in the early going.

Saugus’ leading scorer, Austin Ehrlich, would eventually breakthrough for the Cents however, scoring his first of two goals on the evening, with just three minutes remaining in the opening frame to tie the game at one.

The resilient Northerners responded before the Saugus fans even got a chance to sit back down, as just 29 seconds later, Steven Thompson beat Centurions’ goaltender Cody Foster with a quick wrist shot to hand Antelope Valley the lead right back.

If that wasn’t enough, Antelope Valley tallied again just 15 seconds after Thompson’s goal, as Ray Wilson put home an unassisted dagger, giving the Northerners a 3-1 lead, which they would carry into the second period.

The two teams went back and forth in the middle frame, as the speed and hitting picked up.

Saugus swarmed early in the period and had some big chances but again, Mello was fundamentally solid and in control.

He made a few more big stops, robbing both Aharon Lara and Austin Ehrlich and anything that got by him in the period, seemed to ring off the iron and out.

Just when it looked like Saugus was going to be able to get within a goal, Liam Stirtizinger’s second of the night gave Antelope Valley a three-goal cushion with 2:57 left in the second, a backbreaker for Saugus.

The Centurions needed a quick start down by three to begin the third period and they got just that when Aharon Lara wristed one home just 15 seconds into the period.

The Northerners never took a step back however, even with a short bench and kept pushing, never allowing the Centurions to fully feel as though they were back in the game.

Saugus got a golden opportunity with just over four minutes left in regulation, when feisty Northerners forward Kyle Ljungren took exception to a hit that Saugus defenseman Tyler Lazarek laid on him and began throwing punches.

Ljungren was given a double-minor penalty for roughing and a game misconduct for his actions, severely hurting his team, which still held a two-goal lead at the time.

With 2:11 left in the third, Ehrlich converted on the power play, beating Mello with a steep-angle wrist shot to pull the Centurions within a goal.

A bit of controversy took place after the goal was scored however, as the second of the two minor penalties assessed to Ljungren had just began, meaning Saugus had scored while on their second power play, bringing the Northerners back to even strength.

After some deliberation, the call was correctly made and the teams returned to even strength.

Saugus desperately tried to knot it up late and just missed a couple of times, before Steven Thompson iced it with an empty net goal with 6 seconds remaining, assuring the Northerners of their second all-time league title.

Season Twelve of High School Hockey

It’s hard to believe that this season marks the 12th year of high school hockey action at Ice Station Valencia!

Where has the time gone?

It seems like just yesterday Saugus dominated and won two-straight league titles or when Shane Harper, who now suits up for the Adirondack Phantoms of the American Hockey League, set a league-record for points in a season.

So many fantastic players have come and gone and many continue to play at high levels.

Last week, the 12th season of high school hockey got underway at Ice Station and it looks to be more competitive than ever, as the eight local squads battle itout for another championship in front of packed crowds all season long.

Last season’s champion, the Vikings of Valencia, look strong again and return some of their top players from last season, including forward Hunter Jensen and defensemen Corey Sikich and Blake Rossi. They lost top goaltender Stephen Palmer and are very young in net however, which will make for an interesting year.

Their top challenger will more than likely be the Centurions, who look stronger than ever, while returning many of their top players. Forward Austin Ehrlich looks like the early favorite to win the scoring crown, while defensemen Aharon Lara, Tyler Lazarek and Dillon Thomas anchor a strong backend. In net, Cody Foster will be relied upon heavily to make some big stops.

Bakersfield always fields a strong team and this season is no exception, as a solid core has returned and will put them in the thick of things all season long, as they play the physical brand of hockey they’re known for.

West Valley has won a handful of league titles and looks to get back on top of things this season, with their strength coming between the pipes. They are also fairly deep at forward and have more than a few guys that know how to put the puck in the net.

The Indians don’t have a ton of depth but their top line is as good as they come, led by big-time scorer Joey Cicoria, a senior who was also one of the top football players this season for Hart.

The Northerners return a deep lineup as well, led by forward Ray Wilson.

Burbank’s roster is not as deep as in years past and odds are it will be somewhat of a rebuilding year for them, the same can be said for the Cowboys, who have struggled for a few seasons but seem to be figuring out how to win and will be a force in the years to come.

There are always surprises and upsets and we fully expect this season to be no different, as all of these teams have proven that any team can win on any given night.

Be sure to stay up to date with the high school league by checking Ice Station’s Facebook and Twitter pages, where scores will be updated each week.

Catch all of the action in person, where just $5 gets you a ticket to all of the games on a certain night. All contests will take place on Monday and Friday night at Ice Station, so come out and support your teams, as they battle it out for the championship!

All Good Things...

In what would have to be considered one of the most unpredictable seasons in team history, the Valencia Flyers 2011-2012 campaign came to a halt last Sunday in Fresno, with a 4-2 loss in game three to the league-leading Monsters.

The “Cinderella Story” of the post-season up to that point, the Flyers were able to take the mighty Monsters to a decisive third game but came up just short. After a very successful season however, the team headed home with their heads held high.

The Flyers defeated the San Diego Gulls in three games the weekend before, which produced a Western Division Finals matchup with the top-seeded Monsters last weekend. In a short series, all three games were played on the Monsters’ home ice; a tough task regardless of the team or level. The Flyers were up for the challenge however and made the series an instant classic.

In the opening game, it took the Monsters only 37 seconds to flex their muscles, as the scrappy Jason Beisinger put home a power play marker with assists from linemate Marc Haaf and defenseman Gunnar Dircks.

The Flyers would pick up the pace and outplay Fresno at even strength and took the lead, as forwards Sam Khongmuk and Hunter Jensen tallied 1:46 apart to momentarily silence the crowd and get the Valencia bench going.

They say good teams find a way to stick around when being outplayed and the Monsters did just that, as even being outshot 14-7 over the opening 20 minutes of play, they found a way to tie the game at two just before the intermission.

With 52 seconds left before the buzzer, it was leading-scorer Nick McKee who put it home while on the power play, with the omnipresent Marc Haaf assisting for the second time in the opening frame.

In a trend that lasted the entire weekend, Fresno picked up the pace in the second period and dominated nearly the 20 minutes of play but the Flyers found a way to get on the board first and take the 3-2 lead.

Leading-scorer Eddie Keshishian, who was held in check nearly all weekend, took a pass from Josh Escoe and skated over the Fresno line, where he was lined up by a Monsters’ defenseman. The puck squirted free to pinching defenseman Albert Boyamyan who broke in all-alone against Fresno goaltender Tom McGuckin, beating him cleanly with a pretty backhand move.

The ecstasy did not last long for Valencia however, as Fresno struck back just 19 seconds later, as Jason Beisinger picked up his second of the contest from Marc Haaf (yet again) and defenseman Michael Freeman.

The Flyers were outshot by an astounding 20-7 in the second period but goaltender Stephen Palmer found a way to make some big stops and keep the game tied headed into the third.

The two defenses tightened up in the final period of regulation, as shots were at a premium but it was the Monsters who took game one, as Marc Haaf finished up a fantastic evening by scoring the game-winner just 3:51 into the period, with assists coming from, you guessed it, Jason Beisinger and Nick McKee.

The story of the game was the dominance of the top line of Fresno, as the trio (Beisinger, Haaf and McKee) combined for nine points on the evening, while also scoring every goal for their squad.

The Flyers failed to play well with the lead but Palmer was good in net, stopping 33 of the 37 shots he faced, including 30 over the final two periods alone.

The rookie McGuckin took the win in net for Fresno, as in a surprise start he impressed, turning away 24 of 27 shots.

The Monsters were the ones wearing green on St. Patrick’s Day in game two but the Flyers were the one’s who received the “Luck of the Irish” in a huge game two victory.

Once again, the visiting Flyers came out strong in the opening period but this time, neither team was able to find twine.

Fresno continued their dominance of the second period again as well, as the Monsters outshot Valencia 17-3 over the middle frame and got on the board first, as Ethan Carlson scored midway thru the period from Josiah Nikkel.

Coming out in the third, the Flyers knew they had to do something different with their backs against the wall and they did just that.

6:41 into the period, defenseman Preston Nowak placed a perfect shot over the shoulder of Monsters’ goaltender Marcus Harbison and under the bar to knot the game at one.

The stalemate lasted just nine seconds however, as Jason Beisinger put home another one, handing the Monsters the 2-1 lead off an assist from Nick McKee.

With time trickling down, the Flyers turned up the pressure but the Fresno defense allowed only four shots the entire third period. Luckily for the Flyers, two of the four got past Harbison.

With 4:42 left before what could be the end of their season, Sebastien Beauregard’s first of the playoffs, on a beauty of a wrist shot, tied the game at two and sent it into overtime.

In the first overtime period, the Flyers were forced to kill a too-many men penalty midway thru and just minutes later, Mr. Clutch, Austin Ehrlich ended the game for the Flyers.

The league-leader in regular season rookie goal scoring took a pass from fellow rookie Hunter Jensen in the neutral zone and broke free against Harbison.

Ehrlich faked a shot and put the puck right up under the bar, sending the Flyers bench onto the ice and the series to a third game on Sunday.

The win for the Flyers not only continued the series but marked only the second time in 20 all-time tries that the Flyers had bested the Monsters and the first-ever time in Fresno that the Flyers were able to pick up at least a point.

Stephen Palmer took the win in net for Valencia, finishing strong again, while stopping 41 of 43 Monsters’ shots.

Harbison, who did not lose in regulation all regular season, was hit with the loss, while allowing three goals on just 21 shots.

In game three, the Fresno power play was alive and well again, as both Josiah Nikkel and Jason Beisinger scored with the man advantage in the opening period. The Flyers however, got a goal from rookie Raymond Wilson in between the two, to slow things down and head to the locker room down by just one goal.

Only one goal came in the second period and it was the Flyers’ Austin Ehrlich putting it home while short-handed to tie the game at two just 17 seconds into the middle stanza.

With the game tied at two and very close in all facets, the two teams headed to the third with each season on the line.

The Monsters’ stars come out hard in the third however and ended the Flyers’ season with two goals scored by their top line.

Nick McKee put one home 2:43 in, from Marc Haaf and Jason Beisinger and at 12:38 Beisinger essentially put the game away from Haaf and McKee.

The Flyers fought valiantly but the Fresno offense and top line were ultimately just too much, as the league leaders moved on to the Thorne Cup Finals, while the Flyers season ended, despite a fantastic run.

Stephen Palmer was the hard-luck loser in net for the Flyers, as the veteran finished up a solid second year but allowed four goals on 35 shots.

Winning his second game of the series and furthering a goaltending controversy (a good one to have) was Tom McGuckin, who stopped 25 of 27.

Despite the loss, the Flyers took the best team in the league over the last three seasons to the edge and beat them for only the second time in team history.

All of this coming from a team that started off the season six months ago in Grapevine, Texas by losing all three games, with only 11 players on the roster that finished the season with the team.

It took a few weeks but once first-year Head Coach Jocelyn Langlois implemented his system and got his players to buy into his philosophy, the team took off and went on a pretty good run. Sweeping Phoenix at home, taking Fresno to the shootout twice in three games and taking two of three in Arizona against the Redhawks started the team’s “mojo”.

From mid-November until the showcase, the Flyers cooled off a bit however, losing five of seven and finding themselves out of the playoff picture.

The turning point in the season came while in Las Vegas during the showcase, where the Flyers won three of the four games, while picking up a total of seven out of a possible eight points. Of the three wins, the biggest was a 4-2 victory over the top team in the Northern Pacific Hockey League, the Southern Oregon Spartans.

After the holiday break the team came back refreshed and with a few new faces, as defenseman Jordan Furlane was joined by rookies Hunter Jensen, Ray Wilson and veteran forward Sebastien Beauregard, who led the team in points in the second half of the season.

The first series after the break was a three-gamer at home against the first-year Ogden Mustangs, whom the Flyers swept with ease.

After a tough loss in San Diego, they returned home and took on one of the top teams in the league, the Boulder Bison. Valencia won two of the three games behind great third period comebacks in a playoff like atmosphere and nearly won a third.

The momentum was temporarily halted the next weekend with three losses to arguably the best team in the league, the Idaho Junior Steelheads.

The Flyers then returned for a home-at-home with San Diego, winning both games and beginning to creep up on the Western Division’s second place squad.

The next weekend they returned home to take two of three from the Arizona Redhawks, clinching a playoff spot in the process.

They then wrapped up the season with a bow, beating Long Beach and San Diego once more and missing second place by just one point, setting up a first round matchup with the rival Gulls.

Overall, the Flyers followed up a 9-12-4 first half of the season by going 3-0-1 at the showcase, before an amazing record of 11-5-1 down the stretch.

In the opening round the Flyers took game one before dropping game two to the Gulls in two tight contests. Down by a goal heading into the third, the Flyers turned it up and took the win and series, capping an amazing season by winning their first playoff series since the 2008-2009 season.

The acquisitions of J.P. Bouchard, Lance Pennington, Josiah Habighorst, Jordan Furlane, Hunter Jensen, Raymond Wilson and Sebastien Beauregard combined with the return of players like; Ryan Smith, Cameron Randles, Jake Ryan and Bryan Fiol provided an already solid core with a much-needed boost, that nearly helped the team win their first-ever division title.

Although they eventually fell short, the growth of the team from start to finish was astounding and has given the program a leg-up heading into a big recruiting off-season.

Some more highlights from the 2011-2012 season:

- Eddie Keshishian’s 71 points (second in the league)

- Sam Khongmuk’s 40 assists (fifth in the league)

- Austin Ehrlich’s 30 goals (first amongst rookies)

- Sebastien Beauregard’s 27 points in just 15 games (led team during that span)

- Stephen Palmer’s exceptional second-half in net

- Eric Czarnick’s increase from 10 to 25 points

- Brandon Weise’s increase from 5 to 22 points

- Preston Nowak’s increase from 14 to 20 points, even while going from forward to defense

- Ryan Smith’s return and 18 points in just 20 games

- Rookie Hunter Jensen’s 16 points in just 17 games and Raymond Wilson’s five points in seven games

- J.P. Bouchard’s hat-trick in game one against San Diego

- Josiah Habighorst’s five-point game against Ogden

- Phil Contos’ amazing performance in his only start of the season

And much more!

The team grew as a group and as individuals and the entire Valencia Flyers organization would like to thank each and every one of them for their hard work and dedication and can’t wait to see them again at our Open Camp in May!

August 2011 Pricing Adjustments

Like many other businesses, our costs of operations have gone up considerably over the past several years. Electricity to maintain the plant and ice conditions, Minimum Wage and Worker’s Compensation are just a few of the cost increases that we have incurred.

As these increases took place, we absorbed them and did not allow them to affect the standards that you have come to expect from Ice Station. However, in light of the most current and mounting increases to our operating costs, we are now obligated to alter our pricing in order to maintain the high level of services and programs that we have been providing.

Effective August 22nd, 2011 we will be implementing new prices on several of our programs. Please note that these increases will be the first increases we have made to several of our programs since February 2005.

Below is a list of the main public programs that will be subject to pricing adjustments.

Saturday Night Special

Join us late night on Saturday Nights from 9:30pm-11:30pm starting 9/10/11 for our Saturday Night Special. This event features your opportunity to play Broomball and Ice Skate. The entrace fee of $15 per person covers all skating and broomball equipment. Our Bar will be open for your enjoyment.

Broomball is Hockey in Tennis Shoes. Broomball is a game very much like hockey. Most hockey rules apply, except that the game is played with a regulation broomball stick (which is shaped like a broom) and a regulation broomball (which is a heavy plastic ball, slightly bigger than a softball). The game is played on an ice hockey rink. Players wear shoes rather than skates.

We are limiting this event to ages 17 and up. Come and Ice Skate, Play Broomball, and have a Special Saturday Night!

Heat Pee-Wee’s National Champs

Yet another Ice Station based youth hockey team has been crowned champions this season and this time it’s on a national level.

Just days after the Valencia Express Squirt “B” team won a Southern California title, the California Heat Tier Program brought home a national championship banner, thanks to the efforts of their Pee-Wee AA squad.

The team of 11 and 12 year-old players pulled out a tough 2-0 victory over the Red Bank (NJ) Generals at Sharks Ice in San Jose, California to conclude a fantastic season and bring home the USA Hockey Tier II 12-Under 3A National Championship.

Goaltender Tim Huxen stood on his head all tournament for the Heat but saved his best performance for the championship game, where he stymied the Generals over three periods, for his second shutout of the weekend.

Geno Norraik Jr. gave the Heat the early lead with under three minutes to go in the first period and Cole Guttman’s empty-netter put the game away with 19 second remaining in regulation.

The Ice Station would like to congratulate Head Coach Sebastian Azra and his amazing group of young men on their great effort!

Express Squirt “B” Team Brings Home Title

Local kids are force to be reckoned with on national stage

The Valencia Express Squirt “B” team wrapped up an immaculate season with a 4-1 victory over the Bakersfield Dragons at the Southern California Amateur Hockey Association (SCAHA) playoffs this past Saturday.

The team, made up of players aged 8-10 who all hail from the Santa Clarita Valley has been together for two seasons and been a perennial power every year.

Head Coach Rob McDonald (assistants Ramy Zada, Rich Tuszynski and Mark Therberge) guided the boys to the championship game with impressive preliminary-round wins over the West Valley Wolves, LA Hockey Club and Orange County Hockey Club.

The Express dominated the Dragons for most of the game and never relinquished the momentum. Derian Theberge scored two goals in the game while goaltender Tyler Shea sparkled in net, stopping 20 of 21 shots to ensure the Express its second consecutive SCAHA Title.

The victory win earned the Express a chance to compete in the California State Championships this weekend in San Jose.

The team has been playing together for the past two seasons and continues to impress in tournaments and championships.
Cougars Hockey National Champions

Ice Station based Cougars bring home ACHA Division III Title

The third time was a charm for the College of the Canyons men’s ice hockey club, as in just their third-ever appearance at the ACHA Division III National Tournament, they were crowned champions.

Matched up against a bevy of tough four-year schools, the junior-college Cougars made it out of group play undefeated, with convincing wins over Fredonia State, Loyola-Maryland and Saginaw Valley State. The offense was led by former Valencia Flyers forward Brian Voogt, as his seven points through group play were good enough for second overall in the tournament.

The three wins catapulted the Cougars into the medal round, where they faced off Saturday morning against California University of Pennsylvania, who they ousted 2-1 in an exhilarating overtime victory.

The final was then set, as COC would have to get by the Hope College Flying Dutchmen, which would have been tough enough under normal circumstances. The circumstances were far from normal however, as Hope College just so happens to be located in Holland, Michigan; the host city for this years’ tournament.

As if the plot needed more thickening, the Flying Dutchmen booted COC from the tournament just three seasons prior.

Early this season however, the Cougars were able to beat Hope College 5-3 in an Iowa tournament and that game may have given them the confidence needed heading into the final; in hostile territory.

The Cougars were able to hush the crowd early on, as the aforementioned Voogt cut through two defenders and beat the Hope goaltender to begin the scoring.

Hope would come back and take the 2-1 lead early in the second period but three straight COC goals iced the victory.

Andy Jakiel, also a former Flyer and current Ice Station employee, knotted the game at two, before Voogt added another. Just seconds later, another name familiar to Ice Station, Zach Flaschner extended the lead to 4-2 COC.

In the third, Hope would get back within a goal before another former Flyer, Tyler Gilmore put it away with a breakaway tally that sent Hope packing.

The Cougars went 5-0 in the tournament, all wins in net coming from Mikey McGrath, and finished the season with a record of 26-0-0. With the title coming home to both College of the Canyons and Ice Station Valencia, it’s safe to say a dynasty has been born in the Santa Clarita Valley.

Third Time’s a Charm

College of the Canyons Hockey Club set for their third straight appearance at Nationals

Once again the undefeated College of the Canyons Cougars men’s hockey team is heading to the ACHA Division III National Tournament in Holland, Michigan but no longer are they considered underdogs.

The program, which has called Ice Station Valencia home since its inception in 2005 is becoming more of a dynasty than a revelation.

Head Coach John Tafferner has taken the club from a way for players to extend their hockey careers with little to no extra work, into one of the most dominant club hockey teams in the nation.

Over half of COC’s roster is made up of Santa Clarita residents and all of those players have played youth or junior hockey at Ice Station prior to joining the Cougars.

COC swept their way through the PCHA championships in February, which punched their ticket to nationals yet again. The Cougars are undefeated during the regulation season; the only blemishes on an otherwise immaculate record came in exhibition matches with Division I squads.

COC is one of just 16 teams across the nation that qualified for the national tournament and will kick off their slate against Fredonia State at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, before facing Loyola-Maryland at 4 p.m. Thursday and finally Saginaw Valley State at 2:45 p.m. Friday. After the round-robin has commenced, the Cougars could very well be on their way to the play-downs for the title.

COC hopes to improve on their quarterfinal exit last year and continue to prove that hockey on the west coast and more specifically at Ice Station Valencia is competitive at a national level.

Free Hockey Clinic a Huge Success

As part of the second annual “Hockey Weekend across America” Ice Station Valencia once again teamed up with USA Hockey to put on a FREE hockey clinic on Saturday February 19.

With the help of a few Valencia Flyers Junior “A” Hockey Club players, Hockey Administrator John Fregeau and Flyers’ Head Coach Eric LeMarque welcomed more than 40 new players, ages 3-44, to the ice to take part in drills and fun for an hour.

A number of players picked the game up immediately and all had a great time learning the basics for a great price!

The clinic group doubled in size from last season and with the advent of new learn-to-play clinics upcoming, they will be welcomed back to continue their learning and eventually play in one of Ice Station Valencia’s numerous house leagues where they can play the game they already love.
